We are seeking a Director of Strategic Finance to lead the newly expanded finance function of the group (jointly with the recently appointed Director of Operational Finance), shaping and overseeing the financial strategy to manage a Departmental Budget of over £80bn a year. 

The work of the Department for Education is at the heart of the Prime Minister’s agenda to make Britain a country that works for everyone.  With its newly expanded role across the entire education system – including skills, further and higher education alongside schools and early years’ education – the Department is central to the Government’s social mobility and economic agendas.  Encompassing the Government Equalities Office (GEO), the Department also supports the Secretary of State in her role as Minister for Women and Equalities. 

A key responsibility will be to ensure that robust decision support is provided by finance to the Department that protects value, drives value and adds value to the decision making process. The successful candidate will be responsible for the Department’s newly created Finance and Investment Committee, as well as sitting on it. You will work closely with Ministers, the Department’s Board, Strategy, Delivery and Policy teams, to develop and implement the strategy to reflects Ministerial priorities and supports delivery of the Department’s agenda. You will also be part of the senior leadership team of the Insight, Resources and Transformation Directorate (IRT), contributing to the creation of a stronger, more cohesive corporate centre in the Department; partnering seamlessly with IRT’s other functions of Data, Digital and Analysis to deliver maximum insight to the business.

The new Director of Strategic Finance will also need to collaborate and proactively engage with the wider government finance community which leads over 10,000 finance professionals across 30 organisations, responsible for over £750bn of expenditure (40% GDP) and contribute to the Financial Management Review, a central reform programme.

We are looking for a dynamic and visionary leader to inspire the Department’s strategic finance professionals, leading them through an exciting period of substantial change during the implementation of a new operating model, bringing finance closer to the heart of decision making in DfE.
