Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust

Deputy Director – Financial Management; Associate Director – Financial Services

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUH) is an acute teaching hospital working across two main sites: the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. The Brighton campus includes the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and the Sussex Eye Hospital and is also the Major Trauma Centre for the region. The Trust has expenditure of over £600m per annum, provides services to over a million people and employs over 8,000 staff.

The Trust was looking to recruit high calibre individuals to join the senior finance team at an exciting time as they thrive to become an outstanding organisation for their local population, staff and most importantly for the thousands of patients we treat. The Royal Sussex County Hospital is currently undergoing a £485 million programme (3Ts) to replace all the buildings on the front of the main hospital site. The work is happening over three stages and will take nine years to complete. The new facilities will meet the highest clinical standards and offer patients a modern, spacious care environment. Over the last three years, they have faced considerable challenges with their quality, operational and financial performance but are now looking to the future with renewed confidence. On 1st April 2017, BSUH and Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WSHT) entered into a three-year arrangement when the WSHT leadership team was appointed to lead the Trust. The agreement identified a number of key priorities which included delivering the improvements necessary to enable BSUH to exit Financial Special Measures and effective oversight of the 3Ts Programme. Therefore, Allen Lane was invited to recruit candidates for these pivotal roles who were astute, confident, motivated and resilient; and who had the energy and commitment to support the delivery of their ambitious agenda.

Using our knowledge of the sector and network of candidates at these levels, we took a proactive approach to head hunting candidates, thinking in particular about candidates in the South East or those living around Brighton who commuted into Central London.

Our strong shortlist featured candidates with experience in the NHS, and also several sourced from the wider sector. For the Deputy Director position, an outstanding individual was appointed who was living in Brighton but had been working at a teaching hospital in London.
