Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust

CFO

Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL) is one of the largest trusts in the UK, caring for people with a wide range of physical and mental health needs.

They provide a wide range of services to treat people with a variety of health needs. In broad terms, these include common physical health problems, long-term conditions, mental health, learning disabilities, eating disorders, addictions and sexual health. We are here to provide support for people through every stage of life.

They have a strong financial position and are involved in influencing the mental health agenda across the UK.

Brief/Problem:

Given the previous CFO had moved to one of the largest Trust in the country and there were other board vacancies, it was essential that CNWL delivered a message to candidates that reflected what a positive position the Trust found themselves in and what a great platform this role provides to candidates. With the other board vacancies, there was the danger of candidates seeing it as an unstable Trust which was not a true reflection of their position.

Approach/research:

CNWL were looking for an individual who was comfortable when acting as an autonomous board member given the Chief Executive had a national role with NHSE/I as well as with the Trust. The search therefore was for current board CFOs who were working in either the NHS or wider public sector. Given recent appointments from the Civil Service across the NHS, this area was of particular interest as well as ensuring a diverse pool of candidates from a gender and BAME perspective was achieved.

“Although I had not worked with Adrian from Allen Lane previously, I was really impressed with the service I received when recently appointing my new CFO. The shortlist was diverse with a high quality and we were in a fortunate position where we had a real choice when making our appointment. I felt they worked very hard to get to this outcome and wouldn’t hesitate in recommending them to other Trust’s looking for a CFO.”

Clare Murdoch – Chief Executive at CNWL’

Results/achievement:

Following discussions with the Trust, they shortlisted 4 candidates and 3 were appointable. The successful candidate came from another NHS Trust who began her career within the civil service. The shortlist was diverse and evenly split between women and BAME candidates. The client was pleased to have such a choice when making their appointment.
