Corporate Finance Director

The Home Office is the lead Government department for immigration and passports, drugs policy, crime, fire, counter-terrorism and policy. Its overarching duty is to keep citizens safe and the country secure, and is considered to be one of the Great Offices of State having been formed in 1792. With over 30,000 employees and an annual budget of £10.8bn, it is one of the largest and most complex departments in Central Government.

Allen Lane were delighted to be awarded the campaign to recruit to a Corporate Finance Director (SCS Pay Band 2) vacancy following a restructure of the senior finance team. It has been Allen Lane’s goal since 2004 to continually deliver high quality recruitment campaigns at the most senior level in Central Government, delivering applicants from a diverse background.

Brief/Problem:

During a challenging time for the UK Government at the end of 2019, with changing Brexit deadlines and Cabinet Reshuffles, Allen Lane were tasked with recruiting to a single Corporate Finance Director post, with an additional briefing that two further Finance Director roles were also vacant.

The Corporate Finance Director would oversee an effective and efficient finance department, ensuring finance is placed at the heart of decision making throughout the Home Office and across Government. With future plans for transformation, applicants were required to demonstrate track-record of scale and complexity comparable to that of the Home Office.

The additional opportunities within the Home Office also sat at Finance Director level, within the Law Enforcement and within Borders, Immigration, Citizenship Systems (BICS) directorates; and would broadly require applicants to display a similar skill-set.

Approach/research:

Allen Lane delivered an extensive and far-reaching marketing campaign to ensure the opportunity was visible to applicants from across the Public Sector and from the commercial world. An active headhunting strategy was implemented to target passive job seekers while our well-cultivated database meant applicants already registered with Allen Lane were also approached. Using our unique approach, we developed an interactive and engaging micro-site and a Candidate Pack which provided all prospective applicants with all of the information required.

Throughout the process, the Civil Service’s commitment to Diversity and Inclusion were factored in as Allen Lane became an extension of the Home Office, aligned to their vision and values.

Results/achievement:

The strength of our shortlist meant that three applicants from the recruitment campaign were deemed appointable by the interview panel. This allowed the Home Office to hire into not only the Corporate Finance Director vacancy, but also to the additional Finance Director roles within Law Enforcement and BICS.

The successful applicants offered depth and variety in their professional experience, and were able to join the Home Office within 6 weeks of one another.
