Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

2 x Deputy Chief Finance Officers

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICH) provides acute and specialist healthcare in north west London for around a million and a half people every year. Formed in 2007, they are one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, with nearly 11,000 staff.

Brief/Problem:

ICH is a fast paced and ever changing organisation with national and local demands consistently putting the Trust under pressure. Alongside these challenges, the Trust was also experiencing significant changes within their finance department, as the two Deputy CFOs were moving on from their roles for differing reasons (one for a career break, the other an internal move).

We needed to support the Trust in uncertain times and help attract candidates to what was an challenging environment. Although there were strong internal candidates, it was felt the market needed to be tested for two such senior roles, and our brief was to provide a diverse pool of candidates, from both within the NHS and wider public or commercial sectors.

Approach/research:

Our approach needed to be diverse and wide to ensure we attracted a real breadth of individuals with the right skills for each of the roles, from both within the NHS and the wider public / commercial sectors. We were proactive at delivering key messages as to why ICH should be an attractive place to build a career. As we had worked with Trust for a number of years, we were able to put these roles into context and reassure candidates that ICH was an incredible organisation to join, despite there being more movement in their senior finance team than normal.

Results/achievement:

Following a successful campaign, the appointed candidates came from the NHS, including one internal candidate. Allen Lane had placed the internal candidate at ICH three years previously from BP, and so we were delighted to see them progress within the organisation.
