Technology enables so many of the roles at Young Lives Vs Cancer. From processing income from their supporters, to delivering data to inform their campaigns, providing secure systems to manage services and tools to help colleagues work more effectively. The Head of IT leads the Information Technology team and is responsible for developing the IT strategic plan, architecture and roadmap, along with oversight of a customer-focused service desk function, to ensure that IT infrastructure and systems are secure, reliable, compliant and continue to meet organisation needs.

Sitting within the Infrastructure department, the Head of IT is a core member of the Technology Management Team, which also includes Business Systems and Digital Change. This role works closely with teams across the organisation to ensure that the IT infrastructure is fit-for-purpose and delivering strategic impact and benefit.

Main Purpose

  • Lead and develop the IT strategic plan and roadmap, aligned to Young Lives vs Cancer’s overall strategy.
  • Lead, manage and develop the IT team (team of 4), encouraging innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Manage, review, and develop young Lives vs Cancer’s IT infrastructure, systems and procedures to meet the strategic and business needs of the organisation.
  • Ensure that the IT systems and infrastructure are robust, resilient and that cyber security risks are monitored and managed. Maintain and test a business continuity strategy.
  • Oversee IT operations and service desk provision efficiently and in line with service standards.
  • Manage the IT capital and revenue budgets and develop robust business cases for further investment.
  • Lead and deliver IT projects, implementations and upgrades that support the IT strategy and other organisation transformation programmes – delivering them within budget and to schedule.
  • Build and manage relationships with external suppliers, including negotiating, procuring and managing contracts, ensuring best value and that appropriate SLAs have been agreed and are adhered to.
  • Effective stakeholder management and business partnering approach to ensure alignment and prioritisation of IT infrastructure, team work plans, and organisation needs.
  • Horizon scanning and market research to outline new IT solutions that will improve current and future business capability and encourage innovation.
  • Responsible for ensuring that effective IT governance and security is in place and monitored and compliance with Payment Card Industry (PCI) standards, The Data Protection Act and Cyber Essentials and other relevant regulations.

Person Specification:

  • Demonstrable technical understanding and experience of common front and back-office technologies, particularly the Microsoft stack (Office 365, Azure, etc.), cloud services, Wi-Fi solutions, IT Security Components (i.e. Firewalls, Anti-Virus, etc.), voice services, networking and storage solutions, backup and Disaster Recovery technologies.
  • Experienced in implementing ITIL processes and ideally be qualified in ITIL or a similar IT Service provision methodology
  • Robust understanding of implementing and maintaining high standards in information security. (desirable experience should include knowledge of an organisation’s legal responsibilities such as The Data Protection Act, PCI Compliance and Cyber Essentials )
  • Proven knowledge of current and emerging technologies and how to identify which technologies could best meet  organisational needs
  • Strong leadership, communication and change management skills

Bristol or London office base, with hybrid variable remote working (proximity to travel to Bristol / London office base as and when required to fulfil role and project requirements)
