Are you ready to join a Government department undergoing an exciting and significant Digital Transformation? Cabinet Office are seeking the appointment of a permanent Principal Enterprise Architect to help support the ambition to make UK Government digital services the best in the world.

This role is based in the Technology Pillar of the Chief Digital and Information Office directorate, which designs, builds, runs, operates and support the official Enterprise IT systems for all Cabinet Office, Crown Commercial Service and Government Property Agency personnel.

As the Principal Enterprise Architect focused on Enterprise IT you will work on large or multiple pieces of work that are complex or risky. At this level, you will:

  • Define organisation wide IT strategies and be central to assuring services
  • Regularly collaborate and find agreement with senior stakeholders, providing direction and challenge
  • Be proactive in identifying problems and translating these into non-technical descriptions that can be widely understood
  • Oversee or lead complex technical architecture elements of major IT programmes

Main responsibilities

As the Principal Technical Architect, you’ll:

  • Oversee and lead a team of technical Architects
  • Provide technical leadership and consultancy, through the development, operation and ongoing improvement of internal and cross-government enterprise technology services
  • Act as the principal security architect for all CDIO Technology systems and services
  • Identify and select appropriate technical solutions based on a deep understanding of user needs and business requirements
  • Collaborate with product managers, business analysts, delivery managers and others as part of cross-functional agile delivery teams
  • Oversee or lead the technical evaluation of proposals from third party suppliers, as part of government procurement processes
  • Work closely with external suppliers to ensure that their architectures are robust, scalable, open and secure and meet other internal standards
  • Help enable the reuse of patterns, tools, and components across Cabinet Office and wider government
  • Forge close working relationships across the cross-government technical architecture community to identify opportunities for reuse of existing services and components
  • Contribute to new technology patterns, standards and guidance for implementation by government

It’s essential that applicants have demonstrable experience of:

  • Enterprise IT technology architecture experience, with good knowledge of a range of associated vendors, products and services
  • Security architecture within enterprise IT technology systems
  • Architecture experience with common public cloud platforms (particularly Amazon Web Services and other cloud platforms such as Azure or GCP) and related technologies (for example, elastic scaling, platform as a service and networking architecture in the cloud)
  • Communicating highly technical matters to non-technical colleagues across the department
  • Working in dynamic fast paced agile environments, collaboratively and openly with others
  • Building enterprise IT services using user-centred approaches, advocating for the best decision making based on end-user experience, IT administrator/operator experience, cost, technology and cybersecurity risks
  • Leading and influencing highly specialised technical teams, including steering decision making and improving how those decisions are made and technical systems are operated
  • Developing or directly influencing enterprise IT strategies supported by user research, balancing technology against cost, user experience, operational/support experience and strategic goals

It’s desirable that you have experience of or familiarity with:

  • Technology Code of Practice and the Digital Service Standard and how these apply to enterprise IT within an organisation and cross-government
  • UK government cybersecurity standards
  • Applied information governance within enterprise IT systems, such as records management, data protection and privacy
  • Information assurance governance processes as they apply to information held by IT systems, or assurance of the IT systems themselves
  • Building IT services that scale efficiently
  • Working with senior management to define directorate priorities based on medium-long term strategies and organisational direction, including developing forecasted costings and businesses cases for new technology programmes

Please see the job description for further information on the vacancy.

You will be assessed based on the following Behaviours:

Applicants will be required to provide an up to date CV and supporting statement (up to 1,250 words) detailing how you meet the requirements and behaviours listed above. You will also provide a completed diversity form.
