From its foundation in 1841, The London Library has been associated with many of the most prominent writers and thinkers of the day – from Dickens to Darwin, George Eliot to Bram Stoker, John Stuart Mill to Harriet Martineau. All passionately supporting it and drawing heavily on its collection to produce their work. Today, this institution is still in the same magical building it moved into in 1845. This is a fantastic opportunity to work in an inspiring environment and add real value in helping this historic lending library to continue its legacy with all the benefits of modern technology.

The library is currently being led through a tech transformation including a new library management system, new CRM system and going cloud based with a new Finance system. They are at the early stages of this project and are looking to bring in a new Senior IT Manager who can manage the day to day operational IT work and then take over the new systems into BAU as the projects are successfully completed. This is a management position managing a team of two.

Responsibilities of the role:

To maintain IT equipment and systems used in the Library, including:

  • To draw up and administer an annual IT Department budget
  • To buy, set up and configure new IT equipment and supplies

More specifically this includes:

  • Enterprise Application support: You will be the senior point of contact for support of the Library’s various applications including: ALMA (Library Management System), MS Dynamics 365 (CRM), Sage 200 (accounting software), MS Office and Office 365, MS Teams Unified Communications, MS Azure.
  • Email administration: To oversee administration of the MS Outlook email system, anti-virus and anti-spam protection.
  • IT security: To maintain IT security including Firewall configuration and monitoring; administration of anti-virus software; maintaining login and password security for the Library’s MS Active Directory and MS Azure AD and B2C domains; and backup routines to securely backup data.
  • Network Administration: To manage the Library’s on-premises network by maintaining hubs, switches, cabling, and the MS Network layer. Ensuring that proper internet access is maintained by the Library’s Internet Service Providers.
  • Server administration: To administer the Library’s MS Windows servers ensuring they are updated with current releases. To manage hardware issues such as disk failures, RAID misconfigurations etc.
  • Web, domain and DNS services: To maintain the Library’s domain name by maintaining domain registration; and by providing servers running DNS services for both staff and public access to our websites. To act as a technical contact point for Website suppliers and provide support to staff in connection with the Library’s development of its website.
  • PC and peripheral support: To oversee support for PCs, printers, scanners, and other peripherals and their associated software including MS Windows, Office and Outlook
  • Internet access for members: To maintain internet access for members through public workstations and the provision of a wireless access for members to connect to the internet through their laptops.
  • Telephone: Manage the telephone system and the Library’s telephone supplier.
  • Audio Visual: Manage the Library’s audio visual equipment and provide such necessary support to allow staff to deliver events on-site and to live stream and/or record such events.

Training

  • To oversee the training of new staff in IT equipment and applications
  • To oversee the production of effective IT Department documentation, guidelines and procedures for training and troubleshooting purposes, ensuring these are disseminated to staff and available for members as appropriate
  • To advise on general IT training needs for all staff

The successful candidate will have:

  • Higher Education degree or Further Education diploma in IT or IT support management qualification (e.g. ITIL 4)
  • Experience of Windows based networking both on premises and cloud base (Office 365/Azure)
  • Experience of maintaining a variety of IT systems, including CRM (desirable Dynamics)
  • The ability to communicate well, lead, organise and manage an IT function.
