The Office for Nuclear Regulation is the UK’s independent nuclear regulator, with the legal authority to regulate nuclear safety, security and conventional health and safety at 36 licensed nuclear sites in Great Britain (GB).

In order for ONR to achieve its vision of being a modern, transparent regulator delivering trusted outcomes and value, they need to continue to evolve their technology and this role is key in delivering this.

The Test Analyst role is responsible for ensuring all business changes performed by the Information Technology & Delivery Directorate (ITDD) within the scope of the Test Management Office (TMO) are tested with the appropriate level of governance to protect the integrity of all business environments and systems.

The Test Analyst will need to deliver to the highest standards of test approach & methodology and be seen as an integral part of the development lifecycle.

About the Role

The Test Analyst will be a part of the Information Technology & Delivery Directorate ITDD) and report to the IT Test Manager.

The Test Analyst will work with the IT Test Manager to assist with the preparation of test plans and the testing of software in line with ONR testing guidelines and standards. Testing will include verification of requirement/design documentation, and the validation of applications/software through the various phases of testing – system, system integration, user acceptance, etc.

The role will provide support for the planning and execution of test activities across the ONR organisation, working within the agreed IT processes, to ensure robust and high-quality solutions are delivered to the ONR end-user community.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Creating, reviewing, and supporting the creation of relevant testing deliverables based on information from various document types, of sufficiently high quality
  • Writing test scenarios & test scripts using well defined testing techniques, ensuring pre-requisites, steps, expected results & data requirements are clearly defined
  • Carrying out testing to ensure the solution is fit for purpose, and providing information of results, risks, and issues to aid decision making
  • Capturing and managing defects through to resolution and closure, working closely with developers to investigate the causes of defects and help develop solutions.
  • Managing risks associated with testing and taking preventative action(s) to mitigate as appropriate.
  • Working closely with Change Management to ensure testing is conducted in line with business requirements/needs.
  • Assisting the Service desk and developers in the investigation & resolution of support calls.
  • Providing support in the control of test environments and releases into test and production environments.
  • Identify opportunities & suggest ways to improve the testing process.
  • Ensure personal knowledge and exposure to testing techniques and methods remains up to date, appropriate and relevant.

Person Specification

Qualifications – Essential

  • International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB) Foundation Level Certified

Qualifications – Desirable

  • Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Foundation

Skills/Job Related Expertise


  • Significant experience in a manual testing role covering System, System Integration & User Acceptance Testing.
  • Experience in the definition and execution of test scenarios/cases from multiple sources (requirements, user story, design documentation) and the creation of the associated test scripts/data requirements; communicating the results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience of logging, analysing, reporting bugs/incidents and managing bug/incidents to resolution including retest activities.
  • Proven ability in defining and solving problems, using your initiative to systematically gather & analyse information, develop solutions and make decisions based on a judgement. Overcoming obstacles and seizing opportunities.
  • Demonstrable experience of communicating at all levels within the business and third parties, including senior management to escalate & articulate critical risks as required.
  • Working collaboratively with others at all times and in all situations for the good of the business; to build a network of good relationships and develop and understanding of the organisation.
  • The ability and willingness to respond quickly and positively to change; to maintain effectiveness and resilience in a changing or ambiguous environment and to identify and implement change in response to business needs


  • Knowledge and experience of Test Management and Defect Management tools (e.g. JIRA).
  • Experience working with Agile methodologies.
  • Automation skills would be beneficial but not essential.
  • A good understanding of ITIL processes.

Location / Travel

This post can be based at our Bootle (Merseyside), Cheltenham or London office. But regular travel to the Bootle office will be required.

The majority of staff are currently working from home due to COVID-19. As pandemic restrictions are lifted, there would remain some flexibility to work at home subject to business needs.

Please note that this role requires SC clearance, which would normally require 5 years’ UK residency in the past 5 years.
