Founded the same year as the United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention, The Refugee Council is the largest single provider of services working with people seeking asylum and refugees. We exist to transform the experiences of those who come to the UK seeking safety and we speak out for compassion, fairness and kindness.

Last year we worked with over 12,000 people providing crisis advice and practical support, helping refugees to integrate into their new communities and offer mental health counselling to help them come to terms with the trauma so many have experienced. We are the only national organisation providing support to every child who young person who comes to the UK on their own.

Drawing on the evidence from our services we have fought hard to achieve reforms that make a tangible difference to refugees and over the last year we have achieved a far higher media and public profile. We were chosen to be one of three national charities for the Times and Sunday Times 2021 Christmas Appeal which has raised more than £2million for charities.

We are looking for an ambitious and change-focused Executive Director of Finance and Resources to join us at an exciting and critical time. Following the Afghanistan Refugee crisis and the growing numbers of people crossing the channel, desperately seeking safety, there here has never been a more important moment to support refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK.

We have recently published a bold and ambitious new strategy to 2025 that sets out how we intend to have an even greater impact. To deliver our ambitions we need to take forward the next stage of our business transformation driving forward significant improvements to our finance systems and processes, data and IT management and HR practices. The Executive Director of Finance and Resources is vital to ensuring we achieve this. It is a critical senior leadership role responsible for finance, HR and people, IT, risk management and premises.

The successful candidate will be a qualified accountant, and will need to demonstrate:

  • Proven experience in a leadership role;
  • Experience at Board level and ability to work in collaboration with Trustees and colleagues;
  • Understanding and experience of strategic risk management, finance audit and internal controls.

This is an exciting opportunity for the right person.  We are seeking a confident, dynamic and engaging individual with excellent communication skills and confidence to operate at the highest levels. You will enjoy working in a dynamic, fast paced executive leadership team and relish the prospect of moving the organisation forward to support staff to do the best job possible. You will be an experienced, visible and inspiring leader sharing our passion for refugees and championing the difference that strong financial and resources management can make to our frontline services. Our values of courage, collaboration, inclusion and respect will genuinely matter to you.
