Allen Lane are delighted to have partnered with London based, Russell Group University to recruit a Head of Financial Accounts on a permanent basis. Based at their London offices but with a hybrid working arrangement this is an excellent opportunity to join an outstanding institution.

The Head of Financial Accounts will lead, manage and motivate the Financial Accounting team – ensuring a culture of high performance, strong stakeholder engagement and a commitment to continuous improvement.

The role requires leadership, technical excellence, expertise in financial systems and the ability to operate across both policy and day-to-day operational process. The post-holder will be committed to the principle of service excellence and be able to engage and collaborate with multiple stakeholders across the institution as well as key external partners.

Head of Financial Accounts: Key Duties

  • Provide management and leadership to the Financial Accounting team
  • Oversee the delivery Group’s annual financial statements, and lead the statutory audit process for the parent entity, including: audit planning, interim audit, year-end audit and preparation of the financial statements themselves.
  • Act as primary liaison with the external auditors
  • Ensure financial statements remain compliant with the requirements of the HE SORP, FRS 102 and the annual Accounts Direction issued by the Office for Students – including delivery of conversion projects as required.
  • Deliver other statutory financial returns as required, including annual US GAAP accounts and elements of the Office for Students Accountability Return.
  • Support Financial Planning & Analysis in delivery of a comprehensive, timely and relevant internal reporting service, including the preparation of monthly management accounts and the submission of institutional budget and forecast packs to Finance Committee and Council.
  • Ensure the integrity of the balance sheet via an appropriate framework of review, validation and reconciliation.
  • Support the Director of Finance Services in maintaining effective business as usual operations
  • Identify and address opportunities to improve the effectiveness of financial controls

Key Requirements

  • Fully qualified with significant post qualified experience
  • Strong technical accounting experience in leading statutory accounts and audit in a complex organisation
  • Experience of developing and implementing effective financial controls and processes
  • Experience of leading and motivating a team
