Take the Carrick Yard housing development in Luton Street. When a big international building firm couldn’t find a sales partner, we stepped in to create a joint venture partnership and underwrite any unsold units to protect our investment. Then when we felt a big banking partner would be overcharging the venture for financing the development, we decided to finance it ourselves. The result? 171 homes are now under construction, leading the redevelopment of the Church Street area, whilst the council is projecting a potential return on investment of almost 14% – far in excess of anything that can be achieved on cash deposits in current market conditions.

And why does this success matter? Because it allows us to invest even more in public services that are the lifeblood of our communities.

The Role:

We have various Assistant Finance Manager roles supporting different service areas.

As an Assistant Finance Manager, you can make your own powerful contribution to managing the Council’s resources effectively.  It’s also a chance to help shape the built environment of the word-famous City of Westminster with its landmark sites including the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and the West End. You’ll carry out a wide range of commercial analysis, financial modelling and business case preparation.  Where Westminster leads, others councils follow and your focus will be on efficiency, innovation and continuous improvement.  It’s a friendly and fast-paced environment where there’s plenty of opportunity to learn and develop.

About You:

Most likely studying for professional accountancy qualifications (CCAB, CIMA or equivalent), you’ll have experience of providing financial analysis and support to a large function or service. This will include a good understanding of financial planning, budget setting, and monitoring and closing of accounts. Knowledge of the issues facing local government would be helpful. Collaborative, innovative and full of ideas, you’ll also be highly organised and capable of managing your own workload.
